The markings on tergite 2 may
The markings on tergite 2 may reach side margin but do not clearly overlap it. The markings on tergite2 are almost joined ( always clearly separated in Syrphus).
If the markings on tergite 2 were deemed to clearly overlap edges but not on tergite 3 and 4, it would point to Syrphus opinator but the bands are too wide, are not clearly separated on tergite 2 and the scutum not at all pruinose and it is not found in New Jersey.

To me it looks like the yello
To me it looks like the yellow on T2 reaches the abdominal margin - do you disagree?

Looking
closely at the dorsal shots, it appears that the black margin may continue across T2, though quite narrowly at the anterior. But I do not get that impression from the lateral view. I believe the former would indicate Eupeodes. I do not find info on BG that indicates whether a discontinuous dark margin on T2 would indicate otherwise. Can you clarify? I added a photo that I'm not sure helps.

Some other members of Syrphin
Some other members of Syrphini have the yellow markings on T2 crossing the abdominal margin, while in
Eupeodes
they never do. Compare:
Eupeodes
, dark margin on all of T2
Syrphus opinator
, margin on T2 interrupted by pale marking (also true of other
Syrphus
,
Parasyrphus
, and some
Epistrophe
;
Epistrophe
with full bands on T3-4 have the pale marking reaching the margin on T2)
