Several names were proposed for this species, and it was confused with Archytas hystrix Fabricius, but literature references since 1931 should be reliable.
In most of its range (except for the Florida Keys), distinguished by the dark brown calypters. Otherwise, slightly shining and with dark hairs on the side of the face. The abdomen varies from mostly red with a narrow black line to nearly black with only faintly visible reddish patches.
