Identification
Dull to shining black thorax (including scutellum), shiny black to dark blue abdomen, black hairs on side of face.
Range
Widespread and common east of Rocky Mountains, rare in Southwest.
Remarks
Most of the flies placed here are Archytas aterrimus. A. instabilis is rare. Some may represent a third, undescribed species recently found in the Ozark Mountains.
