Large spotted Green Lacewing--detail of head - Leucochrysa insularis

Large spotted Green Lacewing--detail of head - Leucochrysa insularis
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 6, 2007
Size: 13 mm
Detail of head. I guess green lacewings (Chrysopidae) lack ocelli.
Following the key and descriptions in The Florida entomologist Vol. 42 (1959:Mar) No. 1, available linked here.
This appears to be Allochrysa virginica. Quoting:
(QUOTE)
Allochrysa virginica (Fitch)
The adult of this large, handsome species is easily separated from all otehr green lacewings found on citrus in Floriday by the presence of two dusky spots on each forewing and the unusual mesothoracic markings shown in figure 8.
(END QUOTE)

The red V-shaped to heart-shaped markings on the prothorax here, just inside of the attachment point of the wings, match those shown in figure 8 of the reference above.

Aha!. According to Neuroptera of Florida, Allochrysa virginica = Leucochrysa insularis (Walker). It is listed from North Carolina and is widespread in the East.
