North Central Illinois Large Spider - Pisaurina mira

North Central Illinois Large Spider - Pisaurina mira
Streator, LaSalle County, Illinois, USA
June 6, 2007
Size: 2-2 1/2 inches
This spider was on concrete at our back door threshhold. It's about 2-2 1/2 inches in diameter (leg tip to leg tip), reddish brown in color, slender. Help identifying it would be much appreciated.

Moved
Moved from Pisaurina.

Fishing spider or....
This is a male fishing spider or nursery web spider in the family Pisauridae. Despite their large, startling size, they are not dangerous to people. I'm leaning toward genus Pisaurina....

Should be....
Should be in the range, but I'm reluctant to assign a species name to this. They are just too variable in terms of color, and you have to look at the palps of the male under magnification to make a determination.

This
is obviously P. mira.

Thanks Jeff and Eric.

Pisaurina mira
Eric, based on your input, I'm guessing Pisaurina mira. Would North Central Illinois be within their range?
