Widow Skimmer Face - Libellula luctuosa - female

Widow Skimmer Face - Libellula luctuosa - Female
Davis, Yolo County, California, USA
June 1, 2007
I saw a small bird chasing this female widow skimmer through the air. The bird injured the dragonfly, but then saw me and flew off. The dragonfly landed on the grass below where it died shortly after. It was pretty hard for me to watch, but it did give me a chance to get some close-up pictures. They probably aren't terribly helpful for identification purposes, but I think they're interesting to see. Enjoy.

Very nice shots, particularly this.
Colors and textures in the eyes are quite interesting.

Thank you
for your kind words. Dragonflies really are quite interesting (and amazing!) creatures; I think they are quickly becoming my favorite type of insect. =)
