Small Biting Fly

Small Biting Fly
Logy Bay, 47.630604N 52.687664W (WGS84), Northeast Avalon, Newfoundland/Labrador, Canada
June 8, 2007
Size: 4 mm
There was a small swarm of these flies flying around me in our front yard tonight. They were biting exposed skin. This one bit me on the arm and then flew to our red car where I took the photos. Strangely, it looked like it began to have convulsions shortly after it landed on the car. It would twitch so hard that it flipped itself over several times. I hope my blood wasn't the cause of its distress. :) Is this some sort of "black fly"? I took the photos just after supper when it was 17⁰C.

Black fly.
I'm pretty sure you are correct in your identification. The short antennae would pretty much rule out biting midges. Nice shots!
