Pyralid moth - Aglossa pinguinalis

Pyralid moth - Aglossa pinguinalis
Willow Grove, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 27, 2004
Size: 2 cm. long
It is great to have an expert look at our moths. Thanks, Brian.

Large Tabby?
Reminds me of the European Aglossa pinguinalis (1, 2, 3) which is on the Nearctica list and apparently likes to hang around houses. Looks different than the Stored Grain Moth (Aglossa caprealis), and the Grease Moth (Aglossa cuprina). Whatever it is, this species visited our porch five times last year between June 30 and July 25.

I'm quite sure
this is a Large Tabby (Aglossa pinguinalis). My photo on the Guide page was confirmed earlier this year, Tony Thomas mentioned seeing one in New Brunswick in 2003, and we now have an image from John Davis in Washington. Apparently this species is more widespread in North America than previously thought.

Thanks
Thanks, Robin, Moved.
