Syrphid? - Xylota

Syrphid? - Xylota
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
June 6, 2007
Size: ~9mm
We found a couple of these white-legged flies resting on vegetation. They reminded us of syrphids but we don't know which one. They didn't let us approach very close before flying away so if the shots are too far away to ID and should be frassed, just let us know.

Perhaps a Soldier Fly? Take a look at Hermetia illucens
Perhaps a Soldier Fly? Take a look at Hermetia illucens. I am just beginning to identify insects, however I did photograph an insect that was later identified as Hermetia illucens. Take a look and see what you think: http://bugguide.net/node/view/119240

Family - Stratiomyidae (Soldier Flies)
Hermetia (Black Soldier Flies)
Hermetia illucens

Thanks, that is a great fly,
but unfortunately ours don't have those wonderful antennae. Wish we had seen something like that though! It's a beauty. We may just have to frass these and see if we can get closer next year. Thanks again
