Rough harvester ants? - Pogonomyrmex rugosus

Rough harvester ants? - Pogonomyrmex rugosus
Clint, El Paso County, Texas, USA
November 20, 2015
I believe these ants are Pogonomyrmex rugosus, but their abdomen has a different color pattern than the ants that I submitted to BG earlier that were identified as this species.
During cotton harvest, there were many clumps of cotton laying on the ground. However, these ants were focused, for hours, on this specific bunch of cotton fibers near their nest entrance. Initially, I thought that the reason for their behavior was the cotton proximity to the nest, but when I grabbed the mass of cotton and ants and threw them approximately 6 feet away; they continued biting and pulling the cotton fibers. I had not seen this behavior previously.
