Explanation of Names
Specific epithet from Latin ossea meaning "bone," for the "alæ anticæ ossæ (bone-colored forewings)."
Eana osseana of authors, not (Scopoli, 1763) is treated as three cryptic species (two Nearctic and one Holarctic) with "true" E. osseana listed as an extralimital (Palearctic) species in Gilligan et al. (2020), Insects, 11(9), 594: 1-59.
It may be that one or more junior synonyms of osseana applies to one or more of cryptic species. 3571 E. o. niveosana (Packard, 1866), treated as the North American subspecies in Pohl et al. (2018), awaits revision.
Obraztsov (1962) (1) lists two subspecies, E. o. osseana (Scopoli, 1763) and E. o. niveosana (Packard, 1866).
