Flat-footed bug - Anisoscelis affinis - male - female

Flat-footed bug - Anisoscelis affinis - Male Female
McAllen, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
October 30, 2015
Size: M~13.5mm, F~17.5 mm
This pair of Flat-footed bugs were only a few of those seen at Quinta Mazatlan on this day, all on the same shrub. Many were holding their "flags" aloft on their skinny flagpole hind legs and waving them. There were at least 30 individuals and pairs on this one large shrub when we stopped counting. Two of the staff, Carol Goolsby and horticulturist Sylvia Barr, identified the plant to Turner ulmifolia, either in Passifloraceae (known to be the host plants in Mexico) or the closely related Turneraceae depending on authority. Common names are Yellow Buttercup or Yellow Alder. It is native to Mexico and the West Indies, but is planted as an ornamental. I will enclose two images of bug on plant.
