Eleodes giganteus? - Eleodes gigantea

Eleodes giganteus? - Eleodes gigantea
Carrizo Plain National Monument, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
November 1, 2015
Size: 32 mm
Taking best guess on ID, but need expert attention. Little further north than other data points, but perhaps not unreasonably so. IDed via a text search of BG on "Carrizo", which generated a manageable number of hits, one and only one of which looked like a match. Ironically, it was from a place called Carrizo, Arizona -- nothing to do with Carrizo Plain National Monument in California! Anyway, from there I scanned the genus, & this seemed like the only match -- but it's a huge genus, & I might have missed something. Or might be off in the wrong family, for all I know. :-) Found at night in the headlights while slowly cruising the road. It was chowing down on a roadkill grasshopper. Raised its abdomen when approached. I gave it a wide berth, & it soon settled down & went about its business. Second of two found; other one looks identical to my eye, but would be happy to post it as a 2nd data point if anyone wants.
