Blue-black syrphid? - Chalcosyrphus chalybeus

Blue-black syrphid? - Chalcosyrphus chalybeus
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
June 6, 2007
Size: ~11mm
We found this interesting blue black syrphid-like fly resting on a log. It would flick its wings like a spider wasp. It may have been ovipositing in the log?? but we're not even sure what gender it is. Related to Robin's 9154?
