Recently emerged Grappletail 1 - Octogomphus specularis - Male
Butano State Park, San Mateo County, California, USA
May 17, 2015
Found in the calm, late afternoon shade of the canopy-covered creek bed by Anna Kopitov, in a wet, gravelly, stream-adjacent hollow.

This and another recently emerged adult, shown in the thumbnail below, were perched motionless on leaves of Western Coltsfoot (Petasites frigidus, "curing" their relatively soft, chitinous exoskeleta and wings (i.e. drying, hardening, and setting colors) .

On the nearby on the leaf at upper right...and on underneath the right hind-wing of the dragonfly...are two exuviae are still "clutching" the leaf edges. Presumably one of them belonged to the teneral male here.
