Damselfly - Argia sedula - male

Damselfly - Argia sedula - Male
Burro Creek, Mohave County, Arizona, USA
June 9, 2007
There were many of these flying around the creek area, along with brownish females(?). My best guess is a Blue-ringed Dancer (Argia sedula). But, there are many very similar looking dancers, bluets, etc. can anyone confirm my guess (or de-confirm).

We're always hesitant to talk about Argia
in Arizona, the Argia capital of the US with dozens of species! Currently in the guide under A. sedula we have images with this black, Y-shaped, side thoracic stripe. But most of the images have a broad black side thoracic stripe. Does that mean we have images of two species on the same page? We just don't know enough about the southwestern Argia to be able to answer that question. Maybe you can Search through the Argia on Kathy Biggs' Damselflies of the Southwest website and see what you learn and inform us!! We would love to know more about what's going on down there with all those Argia. Great image!

An answer from Kathy Biggs
"Well, the truth is that not all Dancers can be identified from a photo!
Most of the images you linked look like Blue-ringed Dancers, but I'm not expert on Dancers, and esp. not when you throw in the TX species!
A lot of folks are now doing this:
Take a photo of the species in the habitat.
Net it. Take in-hand photos of all body parts, including appendages VERY CLOSE UP.
Then release it.
Just last week that happened, and it was not only a new species for CA, but only the 2nd spot where it has been found in US! It is the Baja Bluet.
Sorry I can't help more here."
