Bee black on Penstemon virgatus - Hoplitis - male

Bee black on Penstemon virgatus - Hoplitis - Male
6 miles NW Lyons, Boulder County, Colorado, USA
July 14, 2014
This very long antenna is almost exactly like the illustrated antenna shown of Hoplitis hypocrita in Hurd and Michener, The Megachiline Bees of California (1955). No other California Hoplitis has this antenna with long narrow scape, flagellum 1 elongate and flagellus 2 not as elongate, but still longer than all subsequent segments. Of course this is only for California. There may be different species of Hoplitis with similar antennae in Colorado.
