I found this cicada stranded on a trail, lying on its back among dozens of dead ones littering the road.

Our understanding of Brood XIII in
northeastern Illinois is that we have only two of the three to six possible species, M. septendecim, the large whirring one with the orange striped abdomen and the smaller M. cassini with the all black abdomen. Yours appears to be cassini
