Hyptiotes cavatus, Spider Romance - Hyptiotes cavatus - male - female

Hyptiotes cavatus, Spider Romance - Hyptiotes cavatus - Male Female
Hand Cove, Baxter County, Arkansas, USA
September 30, 2013
Size: female 4mm, male 2.5mm
Here is an interesting bit of behavior we should have submitted a couple of years ago. We were out at night with our headlamps on and spotted this female Hyptiotes holding a taut line probably to her web (though in the poor light we couldn't make it out). Suddenly she released her hold on the line behind her and was catapulted forward. We next saw her hanging in space a couple of feet away, still bouncing up and down, with the male facing her from an inch away. If the web was somewhere around, we couldn't see it. What we guess is that the male was somewhere along the line stroking it seductively and she had sprung herself into mid-air for a nighttime assignation. How romantic can you get!
