hairy orb weaver - Aculepeira carbonarioides - Male
Fossil Ridge Wilderness, Gunnison National Forest, Gunnison County, Colorado, USA
August 14, 2015
This was a remarkable species that we found at 10,000 feet in the Rockies of central Colorado. They were abundant in the boulder talus rubble near tree line. The weather was cold, especially at night, and these spiders were all unusually hairy compared to most orb weavers. They also liked to vibrate their bodies (just like the common cellar spiders found around homes) until they became a blur in the center of their webs. There was a lot of variation in patterns, so I am sending another picture of a second individual as a separate entry.

Perfect.
The habitat and elevation is perfect. Thanks!
