Platycheirus
Thanks, Bill. What characters that would show in a live photo would be needed to narrow down the id, maybe to species in some cases?

It differs with different groups. Sometimes an important character can`t be seen so other supporting characters have to be used. The secret is to take as many pictures as possible from different angles.
Face, abdomen, legs, wing venation. Side view and top view.
In this specimen - Black ground colour of face.
Face with a central prominence.
Porrect antennae( sticking forward ) but with a dorsal arista.
Female ( eyes separated ).
Abdomen parallel sided.
The mouth margin extending well forward of the knob on the face in some Platycheirus.
The dull bronze markings on tergites found in some species of Platycheitus ( usually yellow orange and then the front tarsi are usually flattened and expanded, especially in the male.)

Got it.
Great answer. Again, thanks.
