Katydid - Hubbellia marginifera - Male

Here is another photograph of an amazing katydid. Sadly, this little guy was dying when I took this photograph. I didn't realize it until found him in the same place two days later. I gave him a proper burial, with humbled gratitude for the precious creatures with whom we share the Earth. I recently read a conversational thread about Katydids, Grasshoppers and Crickets. It originated from a delightfully cute and funny video posted by a Bugguide.net member, Nick M., in 2009. I really enjoyed the thread and marveled at the warm, gentle and caring personalities of those who contributed to it. One member commented something to the effect that we as insect enthusiasts are not fully grown up considering we still play with bugs. I smiled, feeling warm and fuzzy, sending a kindred, subliminal reply to all. "I think we are all still children at heart who choose to remain appreciative of the little things in life that truly matter most.

Nice find! This is a very uncommonly seen species, as evidenced by the fact that we only have 6 other photos of the species on Bugguide. It is usually found in the canopies of pine trees, and it looks like this one is sitting in some pine needles.
