Dragonfly
Little Cultus Lake, Dechutes County, Oregon, USA
September 8, 2015
Hi, Bugguide

I found this dragonfly at a lake in the Central Cascades, Oregon. I'm guessing that it's a Great Basin Snaketail. Do any of you know what species it is?

Thanks,
Phil

Paddle-tailed or Variable Darner
Either Paddle-tailed or Variable, but there's no way to say for sure from the photo.

the lateral thoracic stripes
look nothing like those of any of the 100's of Variable darners I've looked at.

Don't rely on the stripes around here
She is entirely consistent with the species in this part of their range. The species is quite variable in this region, varying from heavy stripes indistinguishable from palmata, to almost entirely lacking pale thoracic markings. In cases like this when they have relatively heavy thoracic markings, the only way to ID them (relative to palmata) is to examine the ovipositor.

Moved from ID Request.
