Derotmema haydeni - male

Derotmema haydeni - Male
Syracuse, Hamilton County, Kansas, USA
August 9, 2015
Size: 30mm
due to small size and fast flight it was hard to catch

yes 30mm including the antenn
yes 30mm including the antennae

This is Derotmema haydeni
The wing color varies in this species from yellow to bright red.

I'm guessing the 30 mm included the antennae? The body would probably be a bit smaller (approximately an inch - 25 mm, or perhaps a bit less).

Psinidia is similar and very closely related, but it will have the lower rear angle of the pronotum more pointed, and it will have much thicker antennae. You might find it in the Syracuse area, but I think that may be a bit too far west (I've never found it in Colorado - yet - that I can remember, but it is in the Nebraska Sandhills, and the OK & TX Panhandles). In Kansas you can find it around Goodland and Dodge City and east from there, so it's not far away. Look for it in sandhills, especially along washes were there are some tall shrubs around. It will be approximately the same size and color as this one, and probably even harder to catch.

Moved from Longhorn Band-wing Grasshopper.
