Alitrunk from Latin ala, wing plus truncus, trunk. This term coined by entomologist William Kirby.

Identification
Alitrunk, used for mesosoma by some ant specialists, noun , plural alitrunks
NOTE: The preferred term for this body region, used by most hymenopterists, including most ant specialists, is mesosoma.

1-The portion of the body of an insect to which the wings are attached; roughly equivalent to the thorax, sometimea abbreviated to "trunk" for wingless forms.
2-In Hymenoptera, suborder Apocrita, such as ants, vespoid and sphecoid wasps, and bees, the mesosoma includes the first segment of the abdomen.
