cocoon on dogwood - Antheraea polyphemus

Size: thumb-size, above knuckle
Is this a cocoon or an egg mass or what? It is remarkable in its tenacious attachment to its twig. It has been through gale-force winds, ice storms, and sleet. Note the leaves stuck to the surface.
