Under a rock. They quickly went into hiding and in a few seconds there were no ants to be seen.

Wonderful!
A quick search online showed that this ant species had not been reported from El Paso. www.AntWeb.org has it in Arizona, Baja California, California, and New Mexico. Similar distribution is listed at www.antwiki.org and BugGuide states that this species is found from California to Arizona and Mexico. But there is another BG entry from El Rancho Puerta Grande near Barksdale, TX.
Thank you again James! Your generous help and expertise is most appreciated.

Please feel free to post ants directly to Formicidae.
It's where they're going to end up anyway. :)
