The area had been burned recently and it was feeding on staggerbush/fetterbush.

With the narrow yellow stripes
and the orange red prothoracic shield we wonder if this might actually be Datanna modesta - for which we have no confirmed images on BugGuide!

Very nice!
If confirmed, this would be the first caterpillar image of
D. ranaeceps
on BG. The hostplant certainly fits.
