Probing for nectar with proboscis on flower heads of the composite Eriophyllum confertiflorum (or "golden yarrow"...in the Sunflower family = Asteraceae = "composites", or just "comps" for short :-).

Characters indicating the ID of Variable Checkerspot here are:

  1) paired white spots along dorsum of abdomen;
  2) yellowish-orange antennae (no black); and
  3) mostly blackish "checkerspot" pattern on wings...with red spots along the distal margin and mostly white spots (plus some red) in interior area.
