Do you remember if these were moving? They look as though they might be "mummies" parasitized by braconid wasps:


 
Aha!
Could these be red aphids that have transformed then into these 'golden' ones? I am asking because on one plant I had lots of red aphids, then suddenly many golden ones and not so many red, on the same leaves. And the golden ones were not moving much (if anything). So interesting!

 
If the red and gold were on the same leaves...
...then I expect that they were the same species, the red being healthy and the gold having been parasitized.
