green orbweaver? - Eustala anastera

green orbweaver? - Eustala anastera
Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA
February 2, 2016
Last night just for fun, I grabbed my camera and walked the perimeter of my workshop, which is a great place to look for creatures that have been down underground. Since yesterday was quite warm for the traditional coldest day of the year, I went with my camera. I actually found three spiders on the siding. This one was a new one to me. Its pattern and shape seem to be those of an Araneus of some species. Maybe one of you can help me identify it/her? Thanks very much in advance.

Looks to be Eustala

Straight-on dorsal image is best for spider ID, as well as face and straight-on ventral.

Ha! I didn't want to disturb
Ha! I didn't want to disturb the spider, so I only got the pictures it LET me get. I was bent double getting most of them, as the ground around the shed is highly sloped on that side. Sorry! I'll try again tonight. Most of these winter-loving creatures have been one-time only exhibitionists. But I'll keep an eye out and hope to get a series of pictures as it changes, getting bigger and changing colors.

This is so exciting. Last winter I wouldn't have dreamed looking for anything! Finding one of these on Groundhog Day is a treasure!

Thanks so much for responding so fast! It's great to be able to share what shows up here with someone who knows the territory!
