Turns out to be not Bitoma,
but a very similar beetle: Microprius rufulus see comments here:

Moved from Synchitini.

Neat
Thanks for the updates!

Just talked to Jim Hogue
at CSU Northridge. He'd like to take a look at your specimen. Do you still have it, and would you be willing to part with it?
I'll be at Eaton Canyon tomorrow with my grandson. We'll take a look as well.

Hi
Unfortunately I don't live near Eaton Canyon. I am based in Agoura Hills in west LA. I don't have a driving license so this trip to Eaton Canyon was much a once in a lifetime visit, at least for now :)

I have no interest in keeping the specimen for myself, so if anyone wants it, its available if they can either drop by or otherwise.

Thanks,
We found enough today to get a proper ID.

Nice
Yeah the sycamores probably had a bunch of neat stuff. There were some Coccinellids I was hoping for but didn't turn them up.

Nice-
After looking at the specimens, it looks like B. gracilis is the closest. Also found some on sycamores in the Rosebowl yesterday. More soon.
