Explanation of Names
ferrugineus is Latin for "rusty"
Range
NL west to MB and south to along the Atlantic to VA, along the Appalachians to northern GA and in the midwest to souther AR. (1)
Food
Gray birch (Betula populifolia), paper birch (Betula papyrifera) and presumably yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis) (at high elevations) and black (river) birch (Betula nigra) (at mid elevations). (1)

Peridea bordeloni is a less contrasting species which feeds on river birch (Betula nigra). It is found south of ferruginea with overlap in the Appalachians. (1)
