Probably L. virginica

Troy, I think this is L. virginica. See my guide page and image:

Note the yellow "sideburns" (black in L. thoracica) and beard, the fairly trim body (plumper in L. grossus, which has lots of yellow on abdomen). This seems to be the late spring Laphria that likes to hang out in sunny spots in woodlands. Brimley (1) also lists it for May and June. See also Laphriini pages.

The only thing on your photo that does not quite fit is the yellow spotting on the abdomen.

This looks like Laphria flavicollis guys. I don't see any yellow on those first abdominal segments.

Herschel, can you clarify which images you are referring to? There are three here (two of mine, one of Troy's) that I thought were all L. virginica. Are they all L. flavicollis? Thanks for your help.

I got your notes about my other misidentified Asilidae, and have them in a folder to be worked on.
