Conophorus fenestratus from southwestern edge of the Mojave - Conophorus fenestratus - male

Conophorus fenestratus from southwestern edge of the Mojave - Conophorus fenestratus - Male
From just northwest of the Theodore Payne Wildlife Sanctuary, east of Pearblossom, Los Angeles County, California, USA
March 30, 2014
Found here in desert scrub/Joshua tree habitat in a glorious state of flowering. This male was nectaring on flowers of Pectocarya sp. and Lepidium flavum.

This individual keys unequivocally to C. fenestratus in Priddy[1958], and is in excellent agreement with his detailed description of the species (ditto for
Hall & Evenhuis(1)). The closely adjacent eyes, as well as the finely serrate costal wing margins, indicate this is a male.

Hall & Evenhuis(1) indicate C. fenestratus has been recorded on flowers of Cryptantha intermedia...which is in the same family as Pectocarya (Boraginaceae) and has similar looking flowers.
