Size: 4+ mm
Would these holes be the work of the cocoon maker or parasitoids who ate the cocoon maker?
Or do you know/can we tell?
near the edge between a small prairie remnant and surrounding woods

Cocoon
I think this is probably an ichneumonoid cocoon, but it would help to know something about the context. The exit holes are definitely from (hyper)parasitoids, rather than from the cocoon maker.
