gray-and-white robber fly - Stichopogon trifasciatus

gray-and-white robber fly - Stichopogon trifasciatus
Karner Blue Sanctuary, Lambton, Ontario, Canada
July 31, 2004
Size: about 10 mm
Patrolling an open sandy area. Looks similar to Tony's image and the shots of Stichopogon trifasciatus by Giff Beaton. Only two species of Stichopogon occur in Ontario, the other being S. argenteus. Cedar Creek's tentatively-IDed image of argenteus looks different than this one. Can anyone say what species this is for sure?

Stich
That is definitely Stichopogon trifasciatus. Named for those alternate bands on the abdomen. None of the other Stichs have this pattern. And most lack that lovely blue-gray color.

S. trifasciatus
Thanks, Herschel; I made a page for this one and moved the image there.
