Acronicta fallax

Acronicta fallax
Baker Park Reserve, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA
August 23, 2005
Size: 20 mm
Final instar on small nannyberry (Viburnum lentago). Eats leaf blade from base outward, one side of midvein at a time, then cuts off near petiole base. Caterpillar had a strong unpleasant odor. At first suspected the food plant cuttings, but Schizura badia (from same plant) had no odor. Pupated in a chamber in soft wood but did not eclose. Found dead and moldy September 30, 2007.
