Teneb - Eusattus muricatus

Teneb - Eusattus muricatus
Bosque del Apache, Socorro County, New Mexico, USA
June 8, 2007
Size: approx. 10-14mm
This was walking on the sand in the evening. I first thought this was in some family I'd not seen before but it looks very similar to Jim's Eusattus from New Mexico, except the elytra have a different pattern.

Moved from Darkling Beetles.

Thanks Kojun -- it does look like the ones you posted.

muricatus
Probably muricatus. Can be numerous in sandy situations.

If you kept it,
you should be able to hear occasional abdominal drumming if it is a member of that genus.

didn't keep it
I saw the discussion about the drumming on a page with one of your photos. I wish I had known about that when I photographed the beetle; I would have tried to see if it drummed. As it was, I hardly handled it except to turn it on its back for the ventral shot. It was a very docile beetle.
