Homohadena infixa - Sympistis infixa

Homohadena infixa - Sympistis infixa
Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
May 18, 2007
At light at night.

Moved
Moved from Homohadena.

Homohadena sp.
This is a Homohadena species, likely Homohadena infixa, # 10065.

Thanks
J.D. I only scanned the live images at MPG and missed the genus. Seems to have more background streaking than infixa though.

Variation
Well, there is some variation to consider. The forewing pattern isn't bold enough and the thoracic scaling not correct for badistriga. And I believe fifia does not have a range extending into Illinois. That pretty much rules out any other similar or potentially confusing species, leaving infixa as almost certainly the species in your photo. You can see an example of the variation in this photo from GA Leps, in which the male looks nearly identical to your photo (Note both sexes have similar antennae).

I'm quite confident this is infixa, but as always, a second opinion to confirm would be quite welcome. But take a look at that GA Leps picture and see if that helps the case for infixa.

Cheers

Absolutely helps
Thanks for going the extra mile. Infixa it is.
