Leaf Miner moth observed on Arctostaphylos andersonii A. Gray (Ericaceae), along Summit Road, Mt. Madonna, Santa Cruz County [Santa Cruz Mountains, bordering San Mateo County]. Only two leaves were observed with these moth tunnels, out of an occurrence of ca. 300 large shrubs (to 2 meters tall, very vigorous plants). Leaf miner moths have been reported as Family Gracillariidae: Subfamily Lithocolletinae from Arbutus menziesii (the tree 'madrono', also Ericaceae) as Phyllonorycter manzanita Braun. Arctostaphylos andersonii is a shrub endemic to the Santa Cruz Mountains; Arctostaphylos, with one exception, is a large shrub genus dominant of chaparral in the California Floristic Province. Generally, I am finding little published material on manzanita leaf or wood insect herbivores.

Actually, I just checked my notes, and although mines on manzanita have been attributed to Marmara arbutiella, according to David Wagner the manzanita feeder is a different species, consistently smaller than M. arbutiella.

the width is between 0.4 to 0.6 mm; Arctostaphylos andersonii is in Clade 2 lineage II and is related to, but more distant from Arbtutus menziesii (Systematic Botany 26:131-143 2001. Unfortunately, phylogeny within the 104 taxa of Arctostaphylos is very poorly resolved (three papers got not very far along the way to a breakdown of the genus owing to low ITS variation). Arbutus menziesii is a common subdominant tree of forests in the geographic region

Marmara arbutiella it is. Leafminers tend to be specific to a plant genus (or closely related genera, as in this case) rather than to one plant species, although there are exceptions.
