Pteronarcys stonefly -- male or female? - Pteronarcys californica

Pteronarcys stonefly -- male or female? - Pteronarcys californica
Gallatin Gateway, Gallatin County, Montana, USA
March 31, 2016
Size: 1-3/4" inches or 44mm
I netted a hand full of these large third year nymphs yesterday 3/31/16. They will hatch out as adult stonefly nymphs in late June. I believe these are Pteronarcys Californica. Is that correct?

I also noticed these nymphs range from light brown (like this one) to almost black. Is this just random color variation or is this a male/female difference? I'll post a photo of a darker one later this week.
