I have seen and photographed a more worn specimen on 4/2/2016 that may be the same one, or not.
This has been submitted to Bamona but not confirmed as yet.

Yes, most likely X. defensaria.
Some of the Xanthorhoes are quite variable and can be hard to get to species.

Hadn't planned to post this until I saw yours. Looking on line I see there is some variation in images returned for this species, but not quite convinced it varies this much.
