Dasymutilla magnifica - female

Dasymutilla magnifica - Female
Corn Springs Campground, Riverside County, California, USA

Size: 3/4 inch
This little lady is Dasymutilla magnifica. This species usually has the hair on the abdomen bright red, but this specimen is very old, so her hair is faded and some is missing. I would usually not suggest holding a velvet ant, because they sting like crazy, but if you let them crawl on you rather than grabbing them, most insects do not perceive you as a threat. But everyone should be careful none the less!
