This particular sycamore tree is covered in these somewhat large yellow springtails(?). Some of them have orange (males?) hitching a ride on the back.

Turns out these are the adults
of the scale insect I've been observing all this time!

I didn't realize that these had an adult crawling stage, but it makes perfect sense. Great job in figuring this one out.

thanks guys. There are lots of scale insects on these trees but these are much bigger, don't think they are related.

Agreed. Not Collembola.

Looks like Sternorrhyncha to me
maybe a scale crawler? Antennae not right for springtail, too many segments I think. Let's see what others have to say.
