fly (DIN116) Laphria sericea - Laphria
Riverbend Park, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
June 24, 2007
Size: roughly 3/4 inch
A good sized fly; reminded me of robberflies, but I've never seen one with the orange colors. Also, shape is different. Did fly up trying to catch something.

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

These very orange ones usually
get identified as part of the Laphria sericea / atkis complex, images in the guide here, but sometimes there's enough info for Herschel to decide which it is. Wait for word from him.

Laphria
I believe with that much facial yellow/golden this is Laphria sericea.
