"Hoverfly lagoons"

http://thebuzzclub.uk/citizen-science-projects/hoverfly-lagoons

Ran across this today and it sounds interesting. Might be worth trying if you're interested in creating pollinator habitat or rearing Syrphidae. The project is being done in UK but surely would work here as well.

Eristalis tenax
Probably the main beneficiary of these lagoons would be the introduced species Eristalis tenax. Some of the native Eristalinae larvae use other habitats, tree holes, even beetle eggs. I wish I could find more information on their life cycles. I am not interested in creating habitat for an introduced species. There are other ways to encourage syrphid flies to the garden. The Syrphinae love aphids.
