Copestylum violaceum - male

Copestylum violaceum - Male
Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station, Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
November 12, 2010
det. J. Hogue from this specimen, taken on Ericameria pinifolia.
“…the alula (lower lobe of wing) of Copestylum mexicanum is totally microtrichose (and smoky gray) whereas that of C. violaceum is clear and without microtrichia on at least the apical half.  Once I learned this I have gone back to the many specimens I determined as C mexicanum, both here and at the museum, and fixed them.  About a third to a half turned out to be C. violaceum including a great deal of those enumerated as part of our L. A. County Syrphidae project.”
