Brachydeutera - Brachydeutera argentata

Brachydeutera - Brachydeutera argentata
Brookside Gardens, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
April 16, 2016
Size: 3-4mm
Based on the Mathis and Steiner key (1), I think this is Brachydeutera argentata. The sharp demarcation between the brown dorsal coloration and the whitish “ventral pleural areas” should rule out B. longipes (“Brown color of mesonotum gradually becoming paler laterally, merging with pale gray pleural coloration.”). Of the other 3 species of Brachydeutera included in the paper, only B. argentata is found this far north.

Moved from Shore Flies.
