Psychidae: Dahlica triquetrella? - female

Psychidae: Dahlica triquetrella? - Female
Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
April 22, 2016
Size: Adult Length ~ 3 mm
An update on the continuing saga of Carl and his mysterious bagworm moths (Family Psychidae). The image shown here represents my third successful attempt to rear an adult bagworm moth from the larval stage. The bag itself (perhaps an example of the genus Dahlica or Siederia?) was found on 14 April 2016, attached to the cement facade of the Wellness Center on the UND campus, Grand Forks, North Dakota. The wingless adult moth eclosed from its pupa case early this morning (22 April 2016).

This image shows the natural position of the bag, when normally attached to a substrate, with the anterior portion of the bag affixed by threads (where the forceps are now positioned in the photo). The pupa case itself emerges from the posterior terminus of the suspended bag. The adult moth ecloses from the pupa case, and then migrates to the juncture of the bag and case, then rests clinging to the bag itself (perhaps waiting for a winged male?) I'm asuming this adult moth is a wingless female.

This is the third example of a wingless adult I've reared in my still unrewarded efforts to rear a winged male. Back to the task, I guess.

Bagworm moths
Hi, Carl. Seems we are on the same quest. Last year one of my bagworm moth cocoons produced a wasp. Al.

Indeed! We are on the same quest!
Your images are really quite wonderful, Al!
